Special Educational Needs and Disability
Here at Larkfields Junior School, we are proud to support children with a range of needs, including those with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Cerebral Palsy, visual difficulties and hearing difficulties. We are equipped to support children with physical needs.
We believe that all children are unique and that everybody’s ‘normal’ is different. We aim to instil in all our children a tolerance and understanding of others and seek to encourage respect for ourselves, as well as for our peers, whilst developing confidence, self-esteem and the ability to make decisions. We foster an environment in which all children are encouraged to take care of each other.
All staff participate in regular professional development opportunities linked to SEND. Within every classroom, a range of strategies is used to support not just pupils with SEND but all pupils. These include:
- word mats
- phonic mats
- coloured screens on interactive whiteboards
- dyslexia friendly fonts and reading books
- alternative methods of recording
- talking partners
- success criteria
- task sheets
It is an expectation that pupils will take care of their own learning by using what is available to them within their environment.
Some children may be involved in specific small group or 1:1 interventions to support their learning, in order that all pupils can achieve their full potential.
